Historical Overview

1957

Association incorporated as Ajax-Pickering and Whitby Association for Retarded Children

1961

Aldon School officially opened.

1966

Workshop program started. Nursery class started.

1969

Present A.R.C. Industries officially opened.

1970

Became a United Way of Oshawa/Whitby affiliated agency. Aldon School incorporated into public school system.

1973

Addition to A.R.C. Industries officially opened.

1980

Became a United Way of Ajax-Pickering affiliated agency.

1981

First Association group home opened.

1983

Supported Independent Living (S.I.L.) Program established.

1985

Phase I of 5 Year Plan Residential expansion (4 new group homes opened). ARC Pine closed. Basic Alternatives to Sheltered Employment (B.A.S.E.) Program established.

1986

Phase II of 5 Year Plan Residential expansion (4 new group homes opned). Lifeskills expansion.

1988

Name change to Ajax-Pickering and Whitby Association of Community Living.

1996

Environmental Youth Program Established.

1999

Community Participation Program Launched.

2003

Name change to Community Living Ajax-Pickering and Whitby to co-ordinate purpose and mission with those of other Community Living Associations in Ontario. Community Participation Program Expansion.

2004

Association introduces Personal Outcome Measures as a quality of service benchmark.

2006

Association celebrates 50th Anniversity.
